Davy Claims Silver at Regional Chess Champs
National Chess Champion Damion Davy claimed the silver medal at the UMADA Regional Chess Championships. The annual tournament took place October 2-8 in Paramaribo, Suriname and hosted the best chess players in the Caribbean region. Davy, who recently returned from the World Chess Olympiad where he was crowned with the title of Fide Candidate Master, started well with solid victories over Fide Master Dewperkash Galadin and former National Champion of Trinidad Marcus Joseph.
In third round action, Davy suffered a narrow defeat to the top seeded player Fide Master Ryan Harper. Despite this loss, he surged back to the top of the table in the rounds that followed, to be tied in the lead with Harper on 6.5 points in the penultimate round. Ultimately, he was unable to break down the defenses of Candidate Master Suradj Hanoeman and they settled for a draw in the final round, while Harper dispatched Dewperkash.
The spectacular achievement is another excellent result for Davy who has dominated local chess for the past two years and continues to work earnestly at building his budding chess career.
