CHARLES F. BROOME WIN INTER-SCHOOL CHESS WITH CLEAN SWEEP

Charles F. Broome ‘A’ captured the 2019 Inter-School Primary Chess Championship in grand style by completing a clean sweep of the boards.

The Government Hill school finished with a maximum 60 points after registering three further successive 10-0 victories when the championship concluded at the Ursuline Convent School last Saturday.

Charles F. Broome ‘A’, comprising Barbados’ CARIFTA representatives Rory Prescod and Hannah Wilson, along with Chanon Reifer-Belle, Yhden Layne and Samara Mayers, cemented their outstanding triumph with wins against People’s Cathedral ‘A’, Wills ‘A’ and St. Judes after brushing aside their ‘B’ team, St. Cyprians ‘A’ and Lawrence T. Gay the previous weekend.

In accumulating 60 points, Charles F. Broome ‘A’ equalled the record set by the school in 2016. Once they completed victory over Wills ‘A’ in the fifth and penultimate round where Prescod defeated reigning national Under-12 and Barbados Scholastics Under-13 champion Tarquin Clark, Charles F. Broome ‘A’ were guaranteed the title.

The champions were so dominant that they finished more than 20 points ahead of three teams battling for second place.

St. Cyprians ‘A’ took the runners-up spot with 39 points, one more than People’s Cathedral ‘A’ and Lawrence T. Gay.

St. Cyprians ‘A’, with a line-up of CARIFTA selectee Keon Lashley, Melvin Terence, Joshua Pilgrim, Nakari Farmer, Nathan Griffith and Rashone Niles, played to a 5-5 draw in the final round against Lawrence T. Gay, made up of Jahnyah Augustine, Ryan Greene, Shaquon Baird-Rock, Shamari Baird-Rock, Demarco Carew and Divine Rawlins.

In the final round, People’s Cathedral ‘A’, comprising Joshua Franklyn, Anoushka Pitamber, Ahron Lovell, Kayode Stoute and Xavier Francis, won 7-3 against Wills ‘A’ to take third place ahead of Lawrence T. Gay on the tie-break.

St. Cyprians ‘A’ had earlier scored 8-2 wins against St. Judes and St. Gabriel’s ‘A’ while People’s Cathedral ‘A’ had a similar margin of victory against Milton Lynch, the 2017 and 2018 champions. The Christ Church school, having retained only one player from the winning line-up of last year, finished 14th with 29 points.

St. Gabriel’s ‘A’ were fifth with 34 points with St. Cyprians ‘B’ (33), People’s Cathedral ‘B’ (32) and St. Judes (31) rounding off the top eight.

Eighteen teams from ten schools participated in the championship.

The Barbados Chess Federation’s 2019 calendar will continue with the National Championship 2nd Qualifier which starts on Friday and will run over four successive days at the Chess Centre on Exmouth Gap, Brandons. (BCF)
