IM Terry Farley (left) vs IM Kevin Denny

ROUND 7 REPORT

IM Farley won impressively against GM Ermenkov in a very complicated ending after a marathon battle. FM Orlando Husbands drew with Colombian Andres  Escobar Medina and both remained  on target for the IM norm. Raven Sturt defeated FM Kevin Cupid to remain in the hunt for the 7 point norm.

In the candidates FM Dr. Corbin still leads after defeating Bryan Prescod. Corbin moved on to 6.5 points andis closely followed by Justin Parsons on 6 points, with 2 rounds to go.

Round 8 Report

IM Kevin Denny, the first IM in the English Speaking Caribbean proved that he is still a force to be reckoned with when he defeated FM Orlando Husbands. This loss puts an end to Husbands’ quest for the 7 points needed for an IM norm. Husbands can only finish on a maximum of 6 points as there is only one round left

Top seed Raven Sturt drew with Bulgarian Grand Master Evgeny Ermenkov to keep himself in contention for the first and his 3rd and final IM norm.

IM Terry Farley continued his winning ways when he stopped Andres Escobar Medina is still just one point away from the norm. Farley had defeated GM Erkmenkov in the previous round and continued in a similar vein to take the point from Escobar Medina. This sets up a fine finish as both Sturt and Escobar are on 6 points and face each other in a must win situation, in the final round.

In the candidates, Dr Philip Corbin took an unassailable lead when he defeated Cody Sargeant.  Dr Corbin is 7.5 points, followed by Justins Parsons on 6 points who lost to Bryan Prescod who is now in 3rd place.

Final Report

American Raven Sturt created history in Barbados when he won the 2017 edition of the Heroes Day Masters chess tournament. The event running since 2002 has offered the IM norm on several occasions, but this is the first time than anyone has actually gained the norm, although many have been very close to the norm. In fact, this is the time an International norm has been achieved in Barbados. The 3 Barbadian International Masters all gained their titles directly from performances in subzonal events overseas.

With Barbadian hopes dashed after FM Orlando Husbands lost to IM Kevin Denny in round 8 and tournament leader Andres Escobar Medina going down to IM Terry Farley, the stage was set for an epic battle between Sturt and Escobar Medina both on 6 points who had to play each other in a must win situation.

After an intense battle Surt prevailed and scored the 7 points needed to gain his 3rd and final IM norm to become an International Master.

Terry Farley was top Barbadian player on 5.5 points ahead on the tie break of Orlando Husbands also on 5.5 points.
