BARBADIAN EMAR EDWARDS IN LEAD IN ANTIGUA AND BARBUDA CHESS TOURNAMENT

After 3 of the 9 rounds of the Antigua and Barbuda Chess Federation Ratings Development Chess Tournament, former Under 18 Barbados National Chess champion and multi-talented Emar Edwards is one of three players in the lead in the 10 player all play all tournament.

The tournament involves 8 players from the fledgling Antigua and Barbuda federation, along with one player each form Martinique and Barbados. It is an attempt to gain more internationally rated players for the host country, who currently have two and it is assisted by the chess world governing body FIDE through its developmental arm.

Emar is the second highest rated player behind the Martinique player, Nicolas Marchal and would be one of the favorites in the tournament. These two have a maximum of three points along with Seymore Smith from Antigua and Barbuda.

In the latest round Emar was in fine form as he wore down Antiguan top junior Matthew Bailey with some precise and attacking play. Not to be outdone, the Frenchman Marchal easily disposed of local Mckala McLeod and has also looked the part so far.

The other leader is the dark horse, local Seymore Smith, who has played with confidence to record his 3 victories so far. He won from his fellow country man Igol Christopher in his last game. Other last round results between the locals saw Jerry Aska defeat the federation’s president Chester Grant, and Jason Fleming winning from Andre Warner.

Even at this early junction of the tournament, it seems safe to say that the winner will come from the Bajan Edwards, the Frenchman Marchal or local Antiguan Smith. In the next round Smith will battle Marchal, while Edwards has the black pieces against Jason Fleming. These will be the two most important games.
